Department of Physical Education

The faculty of Physical Education was started in Assumption College in the year 1956. The department of Physical Education of this college has a glorious past under the able stewardships of Prof. I.Z. Anna, Prof. Celine Joseph and Prof. Ninamma Thomas. Up to 1983 the students of this college participated in the intercollegiate tournaments of the undivided Kerala University and started winning awards and championships from 1961.

The teaching staff as on today consists of two teachers. Ms. Suja Mary George, Assistant Professor is the Head of the Department and Dr. Jimmy Joseph, Assistant Professor. Five coaches assigned from the Kerala Sports Council are Mr. Vinayachandran (Athletics), Mr. Thomas Chandy (Basketball ), Mr. V. Anilkumar ( Volleyball), Mr. Sujith R. (Handball) and Mr. Jijo Nidhi (Fencing). The college herself appointed Dr.Madhu T. as Tennis Coach, Mr. Sibu Sivadas as Baseball, Cricket and Softball Coach and Mr. Charles Edappatt as Throws Coach.

 Assumption College renews its academic and social recognition every year  by winning laurels in the form of university ranks and  awards and trophies in the field of sports  and Games. Over the years, Assumption College has earned reputation in the field of Athletics and Games and our girls could distinguish themselves in International, National, Inter University, State and Inter Collegiate levels. Assumption known for her spectacular achievements in Sports and Games won recognition from the Government of Kerala in 2001 and 2013, when she became the  recipient of the Kerala State Sports Council award for the Best College in sports and games (announced twice). Assumption is also the recipient of the Malayala Manorama Trophy for the Champion College in Mahatma Gandhi University –nine times(1991-92, 1992 -93, 1993 - 94, 1994 - 95, 1998 – 99, 2009 – 10, 2011 – 12, 2012 – 13 and 2013 -14. Assumption received Rajeev Gandhi Gold Trophy for Champion College in the College Games conducted by Kerala State Sports Council (six times out of nine in 1995 – 96, 2001 - 02, 2002  - 03, 2003 – 04, 2005 – 06 and 2014)

College Received Award for the Best College in Sports and Games in the state of Kerala instituted By Kerala Sports Council for the year 2012-13 and 2014-15.

So far we produced two Arjuna Awardees, one Olympian, 29 International medals and 40 athletes and players for India. Chitra K Soman the first College Student ever   to represent India at the Olympic Games received Arjuna Award in 2008. Geethu Anna Jose, the star Basketball player was ranked No.I in Asia and received Arjuna award in 2014 and Terin Antony the Captain of the present Indian Volleyball team and O.P.Jaisha presently No.1 long distance runner in India, Bronze medalist in the Incheon Asian Games  in 2014 and G.V. Raja Award winner in 2014 are our alumnae. 

Our girls became the recipients of 4 international 81 National, 123 All India Inter University 226 State and 516 intercollegiate level of Competitions (2011- 2014). Our college teams brought 211 trophies which includes 190 winners and 21 runners up (2011 – 2014). We are participating in 17 events in sports and games ie, Athletics, Volleyball, Basketball, Hand ball, Softball, Baseball, Cricket, Netball, Tennis, Cycling, Yoga, Swimming, Fencing, Power lifting, Shuttle Badminton, Kho – Kho and Crosscountry.

Prof. Ninamma Thomas was awarded Best College Physical Education Teacher instituted by Kerala Sports Council for the Excellent Contribution in Sports and Games for the year 2012-13.
