The faculty of Physical Education was started in Assumption College for women in the year 1956. The department of Physical Education of this college has a glorious past under the able stewardships of Prof. I.Z. Anna, Prof. Celine Joseph and Prof. Ninamma Thomas. Up to 1983 the students of this college participated in the intercollegiate tournaments of the undivided Kerala University and started winning awards and championships from 1961.
The teaching staff as on today consists of two teachers. Ms. Suja Mary George Assistant Professor is the Head of the Department and Dr. Jimmi Joseph, Assistant Professor. Five coaches assigned from the Kerala Sports Council are Mr. P.P. Paul (Athletics), Mr. Raju Abraham (Basketball ), Mr. V Anilkumar ( Volleyball), Mr. Sujith R (Hanball coach) and Mr. Jijo Nidhi (Fencing Coach). The college herself appointed Dr. Madhu T ( Tennis) Mr. Sibu Sivadas (Baseball, Cricket and Softball) and Mr. Mahesh (Netball).
Assumption renews its academic and social recognition every year by winning laurels in the form of awards, trophies and medals in the field of sports and games. Over the years our girls distinguish themselves in International, National, Interuniversity, State, and Intercollegiate levels of competition. Assumption, known for her spectacular achievements in sports and games, won recognition from the Government of Kerala in 2001 and 2013, when she became the recipient of theSports Council award for the best college in Sports and Games. Assumption is also the recipient of the Malayala Manoramma Trophy for the Champion College in Mahatma Gandhi Universityfor 9 times (1991-92, 1992-93, 1993-94, 1994-95, 1998-99, 2009-10, 2011-12 , 2012-13 and 2013-14). Assumption received Rajiv Gandhi Gold Trophy for champion college in the College Gamesconducted by Kerala Sports Council in 1995-96, 2001-02, 2002-03, 2003-04, 2005-06 and 2013 – 2014 (Six times out of Nine).
So far, we produced two Arjuna Awadees, One Olympion, 2 G V Raja Awardees, 29 International medals and 40 Athletes and players for India. Chithra K. Soman the first college student ever to represent India at the Olympic games and she received Arjuna award in 2008. Geethu Anna Jose, the star Basketball player was ranked No.1 in Asia and received Arjuna Award in 2014. O. P Jaisha presently No. I long Distance runner in India, Bronze medallist in the Incheon Asian Games 2014 and G V Raja Award Winner 2014, are our alumnae. Prof. Ninamma Thomas former Head of the Department was the recipient of Best College Physical education teacher awardinstituted by Kerala Sports Council for her excellent contribution in Sports and Games for the year 2012-13.
